چکیده

The heavy-ion program at the LHC will be pursued by three experiments including ATLAS, a multipurpose detector to study p+p collisions. A report on the potential of the ATLAS detector to uncover new physics in Pb+Pb collisions at energies thirty times larger than energy available at RHIC is presented. Key aspects of the heavy-ion program of the ATLAS experiment, with the emphasis on extending measurements from RHIC, are discussed. They include measurement capability of high-pT hadronic and electromagnetic probes, quarkonia as well as elliptic flow and other bulk phenomena. Measurements by the ATLAS experiment will provide crucial information about the formation of a quark-gluon plasma at the new energy scale accessible at the LHC.

Heavy Ion Physics Prospects with the ATLAS Detector at the LHC

The next great energy frontier in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions is quickly approaching with the completion of the Large Hadron Collider and the ATLAS experiment is poised to make important contributions in understanding QCD matter at extreme conditions. While designed for high-pT measurements in high-energy p+ p collisions, the detector is well suited to study many aspects of heavy ion coll...

The Heavy Ion Physics Program with ATLAS at the LHC

The first Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at √ sNN = 5.52 TeV are imminent. Heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide an extended energy lever arm to the existing measurements made at RHIC and SPS, especially in hard (large-Q) processes. In this contribution an overview of the ATLAS detector is given and the current physics focus of Heavy Ion Working Group is discussed.

Heavy Ion Physics at the LHC with the ATLAS Detector

The ATLAS detector at CERN will provide a high-resolution longitudinallysegmented calorimeter and precision tracking for the upcoming study of heavy ion collisions at the LHC ( √ sNN = 5520 GeV). The calorimeter covers |η| < 5 with both electromagnetic and hadronic sections, while the inner detector spectrometer covers |η| < 2.5. ATLAS will study a full range of observables necessary to charact...

Physics with Jets at the Lhc ∗

The CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is designed to study pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 14 TeV and luminosity of 10cms. The GHz collision rate with 20 interactions per 25 ns bunch crossing places unprecedented demands on detector performance. This report will concentrate on jet physics anticipated from the two big general purpose detectors, a toroidal large hadron collider apparat...

Heavy Ion Physics with the ATLAS detector

Recent results from RHIC experiments suggest that a hot and dense QCD matter, which maybe the quark gluon plasma (QGP), is formed in Gold+Gold collisions at a center mass energy of 200 GeV per colliding nucleon pair. The LHC is planning to accelerate heavy nuclei such as Lead at energies of 2.75 TeV/nucleon. At these energies it will be possible to produce a even higher temperature QCD matter. ...
